University of Balamand co-organizes International Theological Symposium in Thessaloniki

On Tuesday, May 6, the opening session of the International Symposium of Theological Faculties at UOB, AUTH, and NKUA: “Antioch and Early Christianity: From the Apostolic Kerygma to the Faith of Nicaea,” was held at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). Representing UOB were its President, Dr. Elias Warrak, and the Dean of the Saint John of Damascus Institute of Theology, Archimandrite Professor Jack Khalil, and Vice President Prof. Salim Kanaan. The event brought together theological scholars and academic leaders from the Universities of Thessaloniki, Athens, and the University of Balamand.

Prof. Archimandrite Khalil read the opening address of His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East, formally opening the academic proceedings of the symposium. He then delivered the keynote address, titled “The Establishment of the First Church of Gentiles and Jews in Antioch and the Encounter of the Chief Apostles”, which was met with great interest and set the tone for the scholarly dialogue to follow.

The symposium began with greetings from church and university officials. Among those in attendance were representatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Church of Greece, and various Greek academic institutions. The event was marked by warm academic and brotherly spirit and a shared commitment to theological scholarship.

Dr. Warrak also shared his reflections, emphasizing the value of international academic collaboration and the enduring ties between the Orthodox institutions of Lebanon and Greece, noting that such exchanges enrich theological education and strengthen mutual understanding across traditions. He stated: “We take pride in the unique role our university plays—not merely as an academic center, but as a vital institution safeguarding the Christian presence in the Middle East, particularly the Antiochian Orthodox tradition. At a time when many ancient communities face unprecedented challenges, the University of Balamand stands firm in its commitment to preserve this rich heritage, to empower new generations, and to promote values of coexistence, dialogue, and peace.”

The symposium will continue over the coming days with presentations, discussions, and joint sessions on themes central to Orthodox theology and contemporary pastoral issues. The University of Balamand is honored to contribute to this ongoing academic and spiritual dialogue.
