Department of Archaeology and Museology Organizes Heritage Tour in Anfeh

Celebrating International Water Day, the Department of Archaeology and Museology (DAM) at the University of Balamand organized a heritage tour in Anfeh in collaboration with the Anfeh and Neighbourhood Heritage Committee and the Municipality of Anfeh on March 28, 2026.

The tour began with a walking segment starting at Taht el-Rih Cemetery, where an introductory presentation set the tone for the visit and highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the area.

Participants then explored several key sites across Anfeh. The first stop was Saydet el-Rih Church, where medieval frescoes were introduced, including a unique depiction personifying the sea. The tour continued to the Crusader-era water-filled moat and a Byzantine oil press, offering insight into the site’s layered history.

Further stops included the cisterns of Ras el-Qalaa and Dabbagha Beach, known for its traditional salt pans, as well as examples of historical water management systems such as rain chains, gutter filters, and traces of a noria. Participants also visited the Ghir Spring and Msil Spring, in addition to the newly opened Hmem Cave.

The tour concluded at the 1942 Australian railway bridge before ending at the port, where Anfeh salt was distributed to participants.

This initiative reflects the department’s commitment to promoting cultural heritage awareness and engaging students and the wider community in the exploration of Lebanon’s rich historical landscape.
