The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Balamand (UOB) organized a lecture on April 15, 2026, titled: “The Arabic Language and Artificial Intelligence: A Struggle for Survival or a Smart Alliance.” The lecture was delivered by Dr. Joelle Faddoul, Director of the PhD Program at the Institute of Oriental Studies at Saint Joseph University of Beirut (Institut de Lettres Orientales – USJ).

The lecture was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at UOB, Dr. Hanna Al Nakat; Chairperson of the Department of Translation and Languages, Dr. Maria Nasr; and Dr. Reine Nassar from the Department of Translation, along with several faculty members. Students from the Arab 201 course, under the supervision of Dr. Dorine Nasr also attended, in addition to students from Khalil Salem Public Secondary School.

In her talk, Dr. Faddoul discussed the major transformation brought by artificial intelligence, focusing on how large language models work and how they have developed. She also highlighted key challenges these technologies face in understanding Arabic, especially in terms of its structure and dialect diversity. She presented solutions and strategies to strengthen the presence of Arabic in the digital space, including improving the quality of Arabic content and increasing its use on digital platforms and social media. She emphasized the importance of using Arabic consciously online to support its continuity and development.

At the end of the lecture, Dr. Faddoul stressed that the future of the Arabic language in the age of artificial intelligence depends on our ability to use technology responsibly, in ways that preserve its identity and enhance its presence in the digital world. The session concluded with an open discussion and a practical activity on using artificial intelligence to support the Arabic language.
