ALBA Students Earn International Recognition for Innovative Lighting Design Concept

Two students from ALBA, the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts at the University of Balamand (UOB), have achieved international recognition after transforming one of Lebanon’s most pressing daily challenges into an award-winning design concept.

The project was featured in an article published by L’Orient-Le Jour, it highlights the work of Élio Noureddine and Sleimane Haber, whose concept Murfi redefines the role of lighting in contexts marked by uncertainty and disruption.

Developed in response to a global call by Zumtobel Group on the future of lighting, Murfi draws from the lived realities of communities experiencing prolonged power outages. Moving beyond conventional functionality, the project addresses the emotional dimensions of darkness, including fear, isolation, and uncertainty.

Conceived through a human-centered design approach, Murfi is envisioned not merely as a lighting object, but as a companion that provides both illumination and reassurance. The concept is designed to accompany users through dark environments, offering a sense of comfort and presence in moments of vulnerability.

Demonstrating a strong capacity for innovation, the project further explores the integration of ion propulsion technology, proposing a forward-looking vision in which lighting objects can move seamlessly alongside users. While conceptual in nature, this approach reflects a sophisticated balance between technological exploration and social responsiveness.

Murfi first distinguished itself within ALBA at UOB, where it was recognized among a highly competitive selection of student projects for its originality and depth of research. It was subsequently exhibited at the headquarters of Zumtobel Group in Austria, alongside works from leading international institutions.

Building on this momentum, the project was selected for presentation at the Luxfuturum international lighting competition in Shanghai, where it was awarded the Best Concept Award (“Meilleur Concept Award”), standing out among submissions from prominent design agencies and universities worldwide. Murfi was also showcased at Light Middle East in Dubai, one of the region’s leading industry exhibitions, providing a platform to engage with professionals and stakeholders on the role of design in addressing pressing societal challenges.

This achievement reflects ALBA’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and creative innovation, empowering its students to develop impactful solutions that are both locally grounded and globally relevant.
