Bachelor of Science in Biology
The primary mandate of the Department of Biology is to provide excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Department offers a comprehensive program, which exposes students to the full range of biological sciences. Our undergraduate three-year curriculum introduces students to modern studies in general, molecular, cell, and environmental biology. It also emphasizes active, hands-on experience with modern technology. Small class sizes with an emphasis on laboratories and tutorials foster ongoing, productive interactions between students and faculty.

Program Learning Objectives

  1. Introduce students to modern studies in general, molecular, cell, organ systems and environmental biology.

  2. Emphasize active, hands-on experience with modern technology.

  3. Prepare the students to go on to professional programs in medicine, pharmacy, medical sciences, biotechnology, or science education.

  4. Prepare students to enter the workforce directly, as research assistants, data analysts, teachers of science and members of marketing teams in the pharmaceutical and health industries.

  5. Equip students with the theoretical and practical knowledge to pursue graduate studies in biological sciences, with the aim of following a career in academia or industry.

Program Learning Outcomes

By the time that undergraduate students receive their degree from our programs, they will:
  1. Have gained sufficient understanding of the different biological facts and concepts.

  2. Have acquired knowledge on the most updated findings in different biology fields of study.

  3. Be able to think logically, communicate clearly and criticize their acquired biological knowledge and experimental skills.

  4. Be able to use scientific instrumentation and information technology and have acquired written, oral, and multimedia scientific communication skills.

  5. Be able to exert their acquired technical skills to successfully perform basic research techniques.

  6. Have acquired enough knowledge and skills to join and excel in professional programs in medicine, pharmacy, medical sciences, biotechnology and science education.

  7. Be outstanding members of the workforce by having adequate skills to retrieve, evaluate and communicate information from the scientific literature, electronic databases, and experimental data.

  8. Have enough skills to formulate and evaluate experimental research models based on observations of biological phenomena and apply quantitative methods to solve biological problems.

Master of Science in Biology

Program Learning Objectives

  1. Develop an in-depth understanding of several biological topics.

  2. Enhance the ability to analyze and criticize scientific works.

  3. Develop the skills to write proposals, conduct experiments and write manuscripts for publication.

  4. Develop the student’s technical capabilities by offering dedicated courses with hands-on, one-on-one mentoring, in research techniques.

  5. Promote independent thinking and free research.

  6. Develop skills for presenting scientific findings.

  7. Prepare the student to pursue higher education studies (PhD) or direct integration into the workforce.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the M.Sc. Program in Biology, degree recipients will be able to:
  1. Show advanced knowledge and competitive technical skills namely in the student’s chosen area of specialization.

  2. Critically read, comprehend and evaluate original research papers in Biology and any related fields.

  3. Apply the scientific method to design and conduct hypothesis-driven experimental research projects.

  4. Write manuscripts describing experimental results in standard formats for submission to peer-reviewed journals.

  5. Apply appropriate statistical methods to experimental design and appropriate statistical analysis to evaluate experimental results.

  6. Use a variety of modern scientific technologies and describe the theoretical bases, applications, and limitations of instruments used.

  7. Make distinguishable oral presentations to clearly communicate scientific information and personal research results.

  8. Develop a research program and write a research thesis and a research proposal based on the student’s experimental data.

After Graduation
The multidisciplinary nature of any degree in Science provides science graduates with the vital skill of multitasking and the ability to look at life’s problems from various angles. The potential fields of employment such as Aquatic Biology, Biostatistics, Biotechnology, Histology, Zoology, Genetics, Physiology, Forensics, Entomology, Bioinformatics, Medical Representation, Hydrobiology Physiology, and Education represent a small fraction of the possibilities for graduates from our department.
