Department of Environmental Sciences

The Department of Environmental Sciences trains students to understand the scientific basis of the environmental crisis, as well as the social, political and economic factors that affect ecological problems and solutions. The essence of a BSc in Environmental Sciences is to provide students with the scientific foundation, and the holistic critical thinking skills to better understand and manage environmental issues. The Department also offers an MSc in Environmental Sciences that provides students with a general understanding of the field and fosters discussions regarding basic and advanced science, management and solutions of environmental problems.

Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences

Program Learning Objectives

The Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Sciences aims to:

  1. Provide students with the scientific foundation to understand the principles governing life and the interactions between living organisms and their surroundings

  2. Train students to sample and to monitor environmental conditions using both modern and traditional technology

  3. Develop students’ natural resources management skills

  4. Instill in students life-long learning habits and scholarly inquiry so that they become leaders in their discipline

  5. Build the students’ oral communication and scientific writing skills

  6. Prepare students for employment or graduate studies by gaining hands-on work experience in environmental issues.

Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain environmental processes and human - environment interactions

  2. Apply interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches to environmental problems

  3. Use various instruments, software and techniques to analyze, sample and monitor environmental conditions

  4. Critically assess and evaluate environmental problems at a local and global scale

  5. Devise and implement management strategies for various natural resources

  6. Draft professional reports, including description, analysis and recommendations for environmental issues

  7. Design effective oral presentations and scientific papers.


Master of Science in Environmental Sciences

Program Learning Objectives

The MSc in Environmental Sciences aims at providing students with the following knowledge and skills:
  1. A command of the range of subjects necessary to understand and resolve environmental problems and the ability to apply the knowledge to practical issues.

  2. Specialization on certain areas in greater depth.

  3. Understanding of the fundamental mechanisms operating in the environment and the principles underlying the tools for sustainable environmental management.

  4. Development of interpersonal and transferable quantitative and qualitative skills.

  5. Development of the ability to conduct independent rigorous research into environmental problems with confidence.


Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Master core concepts and methods from ecological, physical, economic, political and social sciences and their application in environmental problem-solving and policy-making.

  2. Appreciate the ethical, cross-cultural, and historical context of environmental issues and the links between human and natural systems.

  3. Understand the transnational character of environmental problems and ways of addressing them, including interactions across local to global scales.

  4. Apply systems concepts and methodologies to analyze and understand interactions between social and environmental processes.

  5. Demonstrate proficiency in quantitative methods, qualitative analysis, critical thinking, and written and oral communication needed to conduct high-level work as interdisciplinary scholars and/or practitioners.

After Graduation
The multidisciplinary nature of any degree in Science provides science graduates with the vital skill of multitasking and the ability to look at life’s problems from various angles. The potential fields of employment such as Manager of Natural Resources, Ecologist, Environmental Scientist, Ecotoxicologist, Water Quality Specialist, Water Industry Laboratory Specialist, Water Conservation Specialist, Water Purification Specialist, Water Resource Planner and Educator represent a small fraction of the possibilities for graduates from our department.
