DEPARTMENTS OVERVIEW

NUTRITIONAL SCIENCES

I write this message in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) newsletter, with great pleasure. We, faculty members, students and staff have entered the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The latter has severely impacted the educational system. In particular, in the Department of Nutritional Sciences (NUSC), this has forged a strong connection between faculty members and students. The qualified and dynamic NUSC team has collaborated actively to improve our students’ online learning experience and to make it a very pleasant and memorable one. Our current students’ testimonials truly witness this.

Despite the pandemic, we successfully planned for offering new graduate programs over the next year and for accrediting our program of study over the next three years, through collective efforts from the NUSC team, as well as continuous support of the FHS and leadership of the University of Balamand (UOB). This plan represents continuity with our Department’s commitment to serve the needs of our community.

At UOB, we see Nutrition as an exciting and ever-changing multidisciplinary science field. There is a place for everyone interested in nutrition and food science. Since its establishment in 2008, our Department has emphasized on the role of nutrition in the health and well-being of people. It has focused on the need for collaboration between all stakeholders. Since then, we have been engaged in a wide range of collaboration with other academic settings, community centers, industrial partners, and governmental/non-governmental organizations.

At FHS, we prioritize multidisciplinary research. Currently, the Department hosts a post doc fellow in Food Engineering and agriculture. Our Department oversees the professional Master’s Program in Food Science and Technology (FSCT) offered at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. It has established collaborative research projects faculty members and researchers in various UOB departments and with other educational institutions in Lebanon and in Europe. You can look through the UOB website to get an idea about our current projects and published research featured in the UOB Scholar Hub.

Interested students who are considering a career that focuses on nutrition and food, and their parents, are encouraged to browse our new Website. You are welcomed to meet virtually or physically with us, in a supportive and respectful environment and to pay a visit to our beautiful Main Campus at al Koura region and to our satellite campuses.

Marylin Moubaset
Clinical and Dietetics Internship student

Over the past years I learnt how much nutrition can impact our life and how much dietitians are capable of improving the health of the general population through diet and nutrition education. And I fell in love with it. I am very thankful and lucky to have had such amazing instructors who always surrounded us with love and respect. Not only did they give us all the required knowledge, but they also were inspiring role models. Even through difficult and stressful times, they managed to make the learning experience unforgettable and very pleasant. I am currently a dietetic intern at Saint George Hospital-University Medical Center, and I fall more and more in love with what I do every single day.

Tina Sassine
Senior Nutritional Sciences student

As a Nutritional Sciences student at UOB, I have greatly been equipped with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities necessary to succeed academically and professionally. The friendly and supportive environment built by the professors, classmates, and staff continuously motivated me throughout my studies. Alongside academics, being part of the NutriClub and engaging in several student activities provided me with an unforgettable experience at UOB.

Nourhan Abou Assaf
Nutritional Sciences Graduate 2017

When I decided to major in Nutritional Sciences (pre-medical track), I had such an excitement for what the program will offer, and through the years, the department pooled all its resources to push this enthusiasm further in helping me shape my future. I had a great theoretical and practical training and I was so fortunate to meet brilliant professors who not only supported me academically but emotionally as well. I learned the indispensable role nutrition plays in a person’s life and cherished the role it played in my acceptance into medical school where I’m currently finishing my fourth year.
